Here is our regular ‘chat with the chairman’ where we ask Sidmouth chairman Fionn Wardrop for his Fortfield views over the past week.

First up we asked him for his thoughts on what was another wonderful Saturday for the club’s senior XIs, with a second successive clean sweep in terms of Tolchards Devon League results.

Fionn said: “The 1st XI had a really good win against Exeter, meaning they squeeze ahead in the Premier table.Josh Bess and Will Murray showed their class and experience to steer us over the line with the bat and, once again, the bowling and fielding effort was a good one. The 2nds played very well to beat an impressive Kilmington outfit, with Isaac Thomas excelling in making his fifth successive half century. The thirds had a strong win too with match-defining performances from the up-and-comers, with a fantastic hundred from Jash Patidar and yet another three wicket haul for Jordan Fowler. We’ll have a good go at repeating it this weekend, but once again we have a tough set of fixtures, so all to play for.”

Next up we asked for the chairman’s take on the continued success of Devon in matches at the Fortfield – last weekend Devon knocked holders Berkshire out of the Unicorns KO Trophy.

Fionn said: “It’s always great for the club to be able to host the Devon side. What’s more, it becomes especially enjoyable as our players are involved, which means a good crowd follows the action and, in this latest game, our own Zac Bess played the key role for Devon to see them into a semi-final, which we are also honoured to be staging.”

Finally, we asked the chairman for his view on the ‘most complimentary’ comments from the Kilmington skipper after his side had become the latest team to be beaten by the Sidmouth 2nd XI in a C Division East game.

Fionn said: “It’s always great to hear positive things about our club and ground from visiting teams. One of the real joys of the new league structure has been welcoming new clubs to The Fortfield - and it’s especially true when they play as well as Kilmington did. Many people watching have commented on the improvement in standard this year.”
