Sidmouth set for County title coronation

Sidmouth head into tomorrow’s Fortfield meeting with Plymouth knowing that they could well be crowned 2014 Francis Clark Devon League champions at stumps, writes Stephen Birley.

Had last Saturday’s match at Exeter not been washed out then the coronation of the new champions would have been a ‘given’ tomorrow. However, the six points they banked as a result of the postponement, combined with the 18 that Plymouth bagged from victory over Cornwood, means that it require a 16-point difference between the side’s at stumps tomorrow for Will Murray’s men to be able to celebrate sealing then title with three games to play.

To date Sidmouth have won all 12 of the games they have been able to play. They have had two matches cancelled – the remainder of the top flight top six have all been washed out just the once – and yet the Fortfield men still lead the field by a whopping 52 points.

After tomorrow’s game there will be just 66 points left to play for in the season, so, If Murray’s men can bank 16 more points than the opposition at Fortfield, the title celebrations can begin in earnest!
