Somerset have signed South African test batsman Alvino Petersen as their overseas player for the first part of the 2013 campaign.

The 31-year-old has an impressive record in all formats of the game.

He has scored almost 1,200 runs in just 16 Test matches and has a current average of 42.39 with four centuries to his credit and a best of 182 which he registered this past summer here in England in the Headingley Test between South Africa and England.

In all first-class cricket, the Port-Elizabeth-born batsman has scored 9,812 runs at an average of 39.56.

Petersen says of the move: “Somerset are a successful team in all forms of cricket and I look forward to my time at the County Ground. I hope that I can hep them win some trophies in 2013.”

Somerset chief executive Guy Lavender said that Petersen would play for the county until the start of the Twenty20 matches when he would be required to resume his South Africa international commitments.
