The annual presentation of trophies followed the annual general meeting held on Saturday evening at the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club.

Although cross-country flights this year have been few and far between due to the weather, the awards were shared out amongst several members of the club.

These included Pete Startup from Ottery St Mary, Wyn Davies from Topsham, Ron Johns from Gunnislake, Phil Morrison from Exmouth, John Burrow from Taunton and John Pursey from Plymouth for some great flights from North Hill and on club expeditions and competitions.

Reuben Buss from Uffculme was awarded the best junior and Ellie Carter from Barnstaple lifted the Norman Whyte trophy for best progress. Robert Lee from Exeter was awarded the Wily Old Bird Trophy and Nigel Everett from Bishopsteignton was commended for entering his first flight on the cross-country ladder.

Jill Harmer from Cruwys Morchard was awarded the best volunteer worker at the club by a members’ online poll.

Another online poll by the members was awarded for the best instructor of the year, and Mike Sloggett from Plymouth won this for the first time.

Meanwhile, a surprisingly pleasant flying day on Saturday saw Charlie Stuckey from Kentisbeare become the latest junior member to convert to the K6 glider which has been donated by a member of the club for the juniors to fly.

If anyone is interested in gliding with us at Devon and Somerset Gliding Club then they can find out all about our trial lessons (they make a wonderful christmas present), by visiting www.dsgc.co.uk
