The first of two gliding courses in August for Devon and Somerset Gliding Club was held last week at North Hill airfield, with an emphasis on junior members, writes Jill Harmer.

The course members ranged from experienced 15-year-old Pete Bennett from Yeovil, who has been solo for 12 months, to Toby Melhuish from Whitnage and Lizzie Westcott from Dulverton, both 13 years, who have been gliding for the summer, to another 15-year-old, Jessica Summers, who has just had the one trial lesson.

There were also a couple of Dads on the course, Martin Bennett and Stirling Melhuish to keep a watchful eye, and the families enjoying bike rides round Devon.

Everyone progressed well towards their personal goals, with Pete achieving most. After gaining his silver height on Sunday, going on to pass his bronze flying tests and have a first attempt at the written bronze exam, he also made an attempt at his Silver duration flight of five hours, but missed out by 45 minutes due to a change in soarable weather.

A number of club members enjoyed some good conditions on a Ccub expedition to Long Mynd in Shropshire, they trailed the DG505 Club advanced trainer and several private gliders up the M5 to experience a rather larger ridge than on the Blackdown Hills.

Congratulations also to Ian Hunt from Exmouth who passed his cross-country field selection tests in the Motor Falke with Stu Procter from Dunkeswell.

This means that Ian can now apply for his glider pilots licence and sample the joys of flying cross-country.
