Dunkeswell outdoor bowlers are busy preparing for a new season, writes Steve Birley.

However, there is one thing that the club is desperate to see improved and that is the membership numbers!

The club play their bowls on a carpet as opposed to turf. This means the surface they use is more resilient to the weather and play can often take place when regular turf greens are waterlogged!

The playing conditions are such that is effectively playing indors, outdoors!

The club are preparing for their annual Open Day which is set to be held on Monday, May 5 from 11am until 4pm.

It’s very much a case of all comers being made very welcome to simply turn up and try their hand at the noble sport.

Dunkeswell Bowls Club is known as a very friendly place and they would love to be able to welcome new members, young and old, to join them and indeed boost the membership numbers.

There’s a full schedule of matches throughout the season to be played and so plenty of action at all levels for bowlers, experienced and novice!

The carpet surface also makes it conducive to disabled people being able to play.

Anyone interested in joining the club can, in the first instance contact Tom Williams on 01404 891799 or Richard Morris on 01404 841294.

Alternatively it’s very much a case of get along on April 5 to find out what you are missing!
