In February, East Budleigh (EB) Chess Club suffered a heavy defeat in the Newman Rapid League against Seaton going down 6-2, writes Briamn Gosling.

Although the home team (EB) was outgraded on most of the boards, congratulations to Barbara Newcombe for preventing a whitewash!

A week later EB played Sidmouth Stars in the championship section of the Exeter and District League.

It looked at one time that the fixture would have to be cancelled, but fortunately 12-year-old Sam Lister was able to replace a sick colleague at short notice.

The club suffered another defeat, but this time the team was able to share honours on the two top boards, losing on the bottom two.

In March we have the final round of the club championship, which Kevin Hurst is hoping to defend successfully after holding the title for a number of years.

On Tuesday, March 13, the club is away to Exeter Gambits in the Exeter and District League.

In past years this has usually been a tight affair with honours about even. Then, later in the month, it is the West of England Chess Championships, which this year will take place at the Manor Hotel at Exmouth.

We are very fortunate to have this event on our doorstep each year as in the past it has moved around the West Country.

See Keverelchess.com and Chessdevon.org.uk websites for more local chess news and entry forms for tournaments.

The next meeting of East Budleigh Chess Club is Thursday, March 8, at 6:50pm at the All Saints Church Hall.
