East Devon Tennis Academy youngsters make a strong start to the winter season

East Devon Tennis Academy players based at Exmouth Tennis and Fitness Centre have made a strong start to the winter season with some great tournament wins.

Exmouth Community College Academy (ECC) player Ben Johnson won the Grade Three 18 and under Winter Regional Tour at Taunton playing up two age groups.

This qualifies him for the 18U national tournament in Sunderland in half term. There were also great performances from ECC players Chris Denton and Lucas Urquiza with Lucas winning the consolation draw in Taunton.

Lucas had already had a couple of tournament wins this term at county level tournaments with victories at under 18 level in Taunton and under 16 in Ivybridge. Chris was also runner-up in a county level tournament in Bristol.

Ben, Lucas and Chris were joined by teammate Alfie Woodger to make up the ECC boys’ team in the Team Tennis Schools tournament. They beat Truro school 6-0 to take them through to the Division 1 regional finals next month. The ECC girls’ team of Darcie Morton, Johanna Kathi, Maddie Schuchter and Kirsty Robinson has also made it through to the regional finals beating Wadebridge School 5-1.

Darcie has also had a run of good results recently, winning a 16 and under tournament in Cardiff, winning the consolation final of a 14U tournament in Bath (beating team mate Margaux Slade in the final) and having some good wins at a regional event in Bath. Jessica Johnson also had good results in the Bath tournament playing up an age group. Another great result was for junior player Josie Culliford, who won the Women’s doubles at the County Closed Championships in Plymouth in September.

There was a strong turnout of EDTA players at a recent Bridgwater tournament with Izzy Marks winning the girls’ 9U tournament and Kirsty Robinson runner-up in the girls’ 14U event. There were also good performances by Jo Kathi, Malena Kathi, Sheril Mjeku and Yi-Ren Wong. Further afield in Winchester, Zac Brown also had some good wins in a regional tournament.
