Sidmouth and East Devon Fencing Club’s young fencers bring back gold and silver medals from Glastonbury!

Kenan Palmer, a pupil at Bassetts Farm Primary, Exmouth, won the gold medal in the Under-11 boys foil.

The youngster was seeded second after the poules in a group of 12 and he went on to win his elimination bouts 10-4, 10-7 and 10-6.

He combined good point control with well timed simple attacks, keeping his cool against some stiff and determined opposition.

Alexis Jouan who attends Isca College, Exeter, was unlucky not to reach the top in the Under-13 boy’s foil – an unfavourable refereeing decision in the final costing him the gold.

He won all but one of his other bouts and took home a silver medal.

Both boys have represented the South West in the British Youth Championships’ held each year in Sheffield.

Coach Val Morrish was delighted with the day. She said: “I’m so pleased with how our club members fenced. They are all highly competitive, skilful and thoughtful, but still able to win with grace, and lose with dignity.”

In the Open event Finn Manning, who attends Clyst Vale Community College, Broadclyst, was placed a very creditable fourth overall, competing against many of the west-countries top adult fencers.

Coach Val Morrish said: “Finn’s strength is the speed and accuracy of his riposte. He can observe and analyse his opponents in the course of a bout and adapt his tactics accordingly.”

Some of the fencers took advantage of the trip to Glastonbury to climb the Tor, as a warm-down.

Morrish remarked: “It hasn’t changed much since my last visit - in 1956!”
