Exeter Aces stage cycle speedway international and it’s a roaring success

09:19 13 May 2014

Over the Bank Holiday weekend spectators and riders descended on mass to the cycle speedway track on Cofton road, Exeter, to take part and watch the European Club Championships, writes Nick Cook.

Teams battled it out over the Saturday and Sunday to gain a place in the coveted final on the Monday, with hopes of taking home the European Cup. The standard of riding over the weekend was top level and although the ‘Exeter Aces’ put up a gallant fight they failed to hold off the competition and make it through to the final rounds.

Following the brilliant turnout and riding of the two qualifying days, Monday started with electricity in the air with four teams (eight in total) from the UK and Poland making it through to the semi-finals, consolation final and the final itself.

As the day unravelled and yet more top riding from all the riders the final was hotly contested with the Polish club ‘Ostrow’ taking the cup home!

Many compliments were passed around at the end of the day and the Exeter Aces were congratulated on a job well done in holding such a successful international event. Compliments were aired via twitter following the event, with polish riders stating: “It’s the best quality track they have ridden” and spectator’s describing the cycle sport as “Bonkers”. This has been deemed a massive success for the club, and is true testament to the generosity of it club members, volunteers and sponsors. Conversations have already started regarding the last cycle speedway club in the Westcountry holding future national and international events. As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
