Sidmouth Town bagged themselves a sixth win of the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division season when they defeated Honiton Town 1-0 under the Manstone Lane floodlights on Wednesday evening.

It was a first league game for the new Town management duo of Kevin Tooze and Danny Burwood, who had also overseen Saturday’s 4-2 win over Axminster Town in the Walter C Parsons Cup, a victory that took the Vikings into the last 16 of what is effectively the SWP League Cup, and they will visit Premier Division Cullompton Rangers to battle for a place in the last eight of the competition.

The win over Honiton Town was sealed with a goal early in the second half when Danny Clay curled home a free-kick. Both the Vikings and the visiting side struck the woodwork late on, but Town were not to be denied a season’s ‘double’ over their East Devon rivals – they won the August 29 meeting at Mountbatten Park 1-0 – and they also secured their first home clean sheet of the league season in the process.

Completing an excellent night for the Manstone Lane club was the fact that the match was watched by just over 150 with the visitors bringing a healthy contingent of support.

Town are straight back in action tomorrow when they face what, on paper, looks a tough task away at second-in-the-table Stoke Gabriel. The South Devon side are unbeaten at home this season in the league, having won five and drawn one of their six games to date. In those six games they have scored an impressive 22 goals and conceded five – three of them in one game – that a 3-3 draw with Elmore, who are the only side to have scored more than one goal on a league visit to Stoke Gabriel.
