With a 2-0 defeat last weekend at Gigg Lane, Bury, last weekend the Grecians now find themselves in 20th position in the League Two table and just four points ahead of Northampton who hold the second relegation place, writes Gareth Thomas.

With a history of poor results at Gigg Lane, it would have made all the difference, if on this occasion City had reversed their form and luck at the ground, but it was not to be.

It would also be encouraging to report that it was a close game and perhaps that City were unlucky, but that was not the case, and would not change how things were. In simple terms it was a fairly one sided affair and Bury manager summed it up in his report.

He said: “We played with a tempo, an urgency and a real vigour in the first half, but you have got to see teams off in that time. It gave us the platform to try and force the issue in the second half and we tried to hit Exeter from every part of the pitch and it was a really solid performance in every aspect. It was important we dominated a game against a team around us and I’m pleased with a clean sheet as well.”

Unfortunately City were well and truly pinned back in their own half and were unable to focus on the style of play which can put teams under pressure and bring its own rewards. In simple terms the confidence levels to pass the ball well was not there and it was relatively easy for Bury to dominate the game. Needless to say City keeper Artur Krysiak had his days work cut out, and unfortunately all his good work was undone when the Shakers scored their first goal in the 65th minute when a free kick give away by Danny Coles seemingly catching the stopper off guard. Four minutes later the Grecians experienced their first sending off of the season when Danny Coles was shown his second yellow card. The victory, which moved Bury up to 11th place in the table, extended their unbeaten home run to 13 matches and came on the back of their 10th clean sheet in the last 18 games.

This Saturday City welcomes Cheltenham Town to the Park. Cheltenham are just 4 points above the Grecians, but in such a tight mid table are 7 place ahead. They were beaten at home last weekend by playoff hopefuls Southend United. With an average of over one goal scored per game and the prospect of City favourite and prolific goal scorer turning out for Cheltenham it’s clear that the Grecians will need to have a cunning plan.

With two City defeats and two marvellous wins out of the last four games it would be wrong not to believe, and to bet against a good Grecian result.

I think it would be reasonable to say that against Bury, to coin a phrase the Grecians were shaken, not stirred.

There is still everything to play for and another home win to mirror the result against Fleetwood would calm everyone’s nerves.

Come on you Reds- Let’s get down to the Park and stir up a win!
