The latest offering from the Exeter City supporters group - the East Devon Grecians

Whether we are seeing the first sign of the red and white shoots of recovery in Exeter City’s fortunes remains to be seen, but there are certainly more positive signs and good news about, writes Gareth Thomas.

Starting with the game away to Burton last Saturday the Grecians collected another well won point from a team in the playoffs last season, and with real ambitions for a shot these season at promotion to League One, and already 13 points ahead of Exeter in the table.

The game was played in difficult conditions with a heavy pitch and strong gusty winds making life good football tricky. Having said that though, City had the ball in the back of the net twice in the first half. For the first one the referee decided that there had been a foul on the Burton keeper which is fair enough. The second disallowed goal was ruled offside and seemingly so tight a decision that it would have kept the Match of the Days pundits debating all night!

With Liam Sercombe enjoying one of the best games in recent times and John O’Flynn in the starting line up and also working hard up front as a lone striker, they both combined well to bring City the opening goal. In the 56th minute a fierce O’Flynn’s shot was well saved by the Burton stopper but the ball cannoned off a Burton player and ended up in the net. Yes it was another own goal , the third in as many games, but clearly the red and white shoots of recovery come in many forms! Unfortunately, two minutes later the game was levelled and after that both teams had chances to win the game but it was not to be. Overall a very good result summed up by manager Paul Tisdale who said: “I haven’t seen a performance where our front players put as much pressure on their defence as we did today. That’s not just John O’Flynn and Jimmy Keohane – that includes Arron Davies and Liam Sercombe. They were exceptional as a group. There are lots of things that show optimism going into this really big couple of months for us.”

Last Tuesday’s planned quarter final of the Under-21 Premier League Cup against visiting Burnley was postponed due to the weather conditions.

The young Grecians having beaten Crystal Palace, Southampton and Blackburn in previous rounds and the game will be rescheduled.

This Saturday it’s a home game when the once mighty Portsmouth, and now the largest fan-owned football club in England, visit St James Park.

With Pompey just trailing Exeter by two points in the league table there is much at stake. There is no doubt that with a big travelling support, fans of this Trust owned club will turn up in big numbers. City will be looking to avenge the 3-2 defeat last November which unfortunately was the first back to back defeats the Grecians had suffered this season. Hopefully a City win will mark the continuation of the recent change in fortunes. Come on you Reds!

A date for your diary is Monday February 17, when the annual East Devon Grecians quiz will be held in the War Memorial Club , with the likelihood of a couple of players attending!
