Halwill 2, Fluxton 4

The league table doesn’t lie, but, with five of their six reversals this term being by a single goal Fluxton’s standing in Division Six is perhaps not as serious as their lowly position heading into this game, suggested, writes Stephen Howe

Something to turn over in the mind on the 80 mile trek to Halwill, skirting Yes Tor and the snowy wilds of Belstone. A bare eleven made the journey, though two more players did pitch up seconds before the referee got things under way.

Not an easy journey, nor a sprightly pitch, and one - nil down within two minutes and Fluxton looked like being in for a difficult afternoon.

A gaggle of rooks circled ominously overhead, and a lone fan, silhouetted atop the pitch’s imposing terraced bank, clapped a slow, solitary clap. It was a fine goal, buried in the corner, hit from afar. Fluxton threw heart and lung into the fray and at the half were one down, shooting into the mud.

Fluxton’s rangy centre-forward Matt Wilson spent the game locked in a high-quality struggle with Halwill’s fine, athletic centre-back. One penalty area tussle too many got Fluxton back in the game, courtesy of a Jason Ferrett spot-kick - deserved reward for his 90 minutes of out-thinking all-comers.

Then the seemingly anonymous Olly Paget became less so, shuffling upon the Halwill area like a surreptitious ne’er-do-well and rifling the ball home in-off the post from 25-yards. He has that in his locker! But an equally fine strike from Halwill’s centre forward brought the game back to 2-2. Dartmoor’s bleak north face gazed on, unsure where to put its money.

With fifteen minutes remaining Fluxton were tired. Halwill, never an easy place to play at! Dory tackled, Sercombe thwarted, Ashley nullified. Halwill had pace and momentum.

However, Fluxton had Hughes, who, with a captain’s eye, conjured a scoop over the Halwill defence into the path of Paget, who chipped the keeper for another fine goal. Matt Sercombe was strong in the closing stages and Wilson added a fourth with the last kick of the game.
