Fluxton FC have returned to pre-season training ahead of their debut season in Division Five, writes Jordan Cooper.
The club held a presentation evening at The Volunteer Inn in Ottery St Mary recently to celebrate last season’s achievements, with captain Graham Hughes taking the Players’ Player and Spirit of Fluxton awards.
Matthew Sercombe was awarded Managers’ Player from brothers Alex and Olly Paget, whilst the latter took home the Top Goalscorer honour. Lewis Guppy was named Most Improved, with John Ashley and Rob Ashman receiving the Fluxton Stalwart and Best Overseas Player trophies, respectively.
When asked about what makes Fluxton unique, skipper Hughes, who has played for a number of clubs in the area, spoke highly of the club.
He said: “Fluxton are different to other teams because they play in the correct spirit - towards each other, the opposition and the officials. It’s all about enjoying it at Fluxton.”
With personnel changing each week and a very relaxed aura around the club, the players simply want to get on the pitch and have fun – something that will continue into the season ahead.
Hughes added: “Aims for this forthcoming season are the same as the last - for everyone to enjoy their football, to challenge in every match, and hopefully have a successful season.”
After back-to-back promotions since being formed in 2012, the club has reconvened for the 2014/15 campaign at Tipton St John playing fields on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm – with new players encouraged to come along.
Following a league restructure, Fluxton will compete against a number of the teams they played last season, including Honiton Town 2nds and Otterton.
In Division Six last season they played out two tense and highly entertaining fixtures against Honiton, losing both fixtures 3-2, whilst suffering both controversial (4-3) and comfortable (4-1) defeats against Otterton.
With no friendlies arranged as of yet, they are due to get their league campaign underway on August 23.
