Otterton 4, Starcross Generals 1
Otterton stretched their unbeaten run to 16 matches with a fine all-round performance that saw them lift the Stanley Wilson Cup at full time.
There was a great turnout at Stantaway and they were certainly not disappointed with the standard of football they witnessed.
The game was a very even affair over the first 30 mins, but the deadlock was broken in the 38th minute in favour of the home side when a great Jon Dack through-ball was met by the dangerous Kev Pitt charging in behind the Starcross defence and he struck the ball powerfully beyond the Starcross keeper. The visitors struck back and twice before the break Otters keeper Adam Williams was forced to make saves to preserve his teams lead.
After the break the pattern of play was similar to the first 45 minutes, but again it was Otterton who made the most of a chance when fine approach work by Adam Rolls set up Pitt to thump home the second on 58 minutes.
Starcross launched an inspired fight back, but got little chance out of the impressive Otterton back line of Nick Tweedie, Dink Thomas, Luke Iddon and Simon Trim. However, in one raid Thomas was adjudged to have fouled an attacker and the spot kick was awarded. Williams guessed correctly and pulled off a super save and the Otters two goal advantage was preserved.
Buoyed by the Williams heroics the Otters went tin search of a match-sealing third and it was that man Pitt again in the right place at the right time after Si Trim and lee Mitchell had combined with Pitt notching his 33rd goal of a prolific season.
Despite a consolation for the opposition, the Otters were not finished and substitute Si Tuley squared the ball for Lee Mitchell to rifle a half volley past the Starcross keeper to net his fifth goal of the cup run and make certain the trophy was to come to Otterton for the first time in their history.
Starcross managed to win another penalty in the dying moments, but once again they were not to find a way past Williams as the spot kick was blazed over.
Otterton: Williams, N Tweedie, Iddon, Thomas, Trim, Dack, Yeomans, Mitchell, l Tweedie, Rolls, Pitt. Subs: Tuley, Marish, Chapman, Mclean
Otterton would like to thank the Kings Arms, Otterton for their magnificent sponsorship that has enabled the club to purchase new tracksuits for all squad members.
The club would also like to publicly acclaim the work of Andy Mitchell who spent most evenings of the week leading up to the big cup match preparing what turned out to be an excellent playing surface.
The Otters would also like to say a big thank you to A and J Carpenters who purchased the side a new kit last month and the team are certainly producing the goods in their new gear!
