Sidmouth 2, Alphington 2

Sidmouth Under-15s shared four goals with Alphington in an entertaining Exeter and District Youth League match.

Sidmouth started brightly with the midfield trio of Connor Murphy, Tyler Wellman, and Joe Miller taking control.

Jonny Dunn played the lone-striker role with a swagger, causing plenty of problems to the Exeter side’s back line.

With their wing backs bombing forward the impetuous was all with the home side and chances were fashioned, but not taken, or, on some occasions, good solid defending combined with some fine goal keeping by the Alphas gloves man kept the game goalless.

In their defensive third Sidmouth also held sway and, such was the way that Jamie Newbery marshalled his defence, Sidmouth goalkeeper Jake Sellick had very little work to do in a first half that ended 0-0.

After the break Sidmouth continued to be the team on the front foot and it was an unlikely source that opened the scoring!

In recent weeks a number of the club’s Under-14 players have been given an opportunity to show what they can do playing a year up and it was one such youngster, 14-year-old Ollie Turton who, when put through, kept his nerve to slot confidently past the keeper and into the net to give Sidmouth the lead.

Alphington are not amongst the title challengers without good reason and they showed their qualities by replying inside five minutes with a clinical finish from a corner. In another slick raid they were close to taking the lead, but were denied a second by a marvellous Sellick save.

However, the award of a penalty gave the visitors the chance to take the lead, and they took it in ruthless fashion.

In recent weeks this Sidmouth team has shown real resilience during a busy schedule and it was no more than they deserved when, with five minutes remaining Miller was put through on goal and he calmly rounded the keeper before rolling the ball home.

Both sides pushed for the winner, but in the end a draw was a fair second half result although Sidmouth were clearly the better side in the first half.
