Sidmouth Warriors Under-9s endured mixed fortunes in two meetings with Exeter opposition and also learned a hard lesson in then process, writes Chris Roberts.

First up against the Bulls the Warriors were caught napping at an throw-in the opening stages and it resulted in the Exeter side scoring with a firm header. Warriors quickly regrouped and got onto the front foot with much of the positive play orchestrated by the inspirational Freddie Eul-barker in the centre of midfield and some dazzling wing play by Ewan Badcock and the goal scoring opportunities started to come. However, owing to some resilient defending the Bulls held out to half-time.

After the break the Warriors returned to the offensive and began to pepper the Bulls goal with shots. The equaliser came by a sweetly struck left foot shot from Charlie Roberts. This inspired the Warriors to push on for a winner, but they were continually thwarted by the Bulls defence. Warriors where committing more and more players forward and were left at the mercy of swift counter attacks that saw stand-in centre half Oliver Beech and gloves man Freddie Roberts coming to their rescue on a number of occasions. Warriors did eventually get the ball into the Bulls net again but the ‘goal’ was ruled out by the match official. It was still the Warriors pressing, but in the final minute they were undone and Bulls scored the winning goal with what proved to be then very last kick of the game! The players were clapped off by some very appreciative supporters. What this particular result does prove is that in football you don’t always get what you deserve!

The second game saw Warriors make a sheepish start as they came to terms with the harsh result earlier. However, once they got into their stride they took charge and their slick passing game was evident. Charlie Roberts bagged a brace and other goals were scored by Ewan Badcock and Gabriel Roberts as they sealed a 4-0 success.
