Sidmouth Under-15s end Exeter and District Youth League season on a high

Sidmouth 7, Newton Abbot 1

Sidmouth Under-15s Sidmouth were worthy winners in their final game of the Exeter and District Youth League season, writes Paul Newbery.

The game was played on the hallowed turf of Manstone Lane under the watchful eye of Sidmouth Town manager Paddy Thomas.

The team played some superb football which shoed the Vikings team boss just what sort of talent is coming through the ranks at the club!

From the first whistle the whole width of the pitch was used to great effect and the visitors had no answer to the movement and quick thinking of the home side.

A move down the right involving Dylan King and Joe Miller resulted in Jonny Dunn heading home from Millers cross. Soon it was two when a foul on Jacob Rowe was punished with Tyler Wellman curling in the resulting free-kick.

Great football between Rowe, Jack DeWinton and Alister Forsyth opened up a chance for Connor Murphy who finished in style.

Half-time arrived with the Sidmouth defence rarely troubled and the second half started in the same vein with the home side playing some attractive football and it wasn’t long before it was four with Rowe and Alex Stone combining to set up Dunn for his second.

The visitors struck back to score a consolation before the home side swiftly responded and a Tom Orchard pass through the middle released Murphy to score his second.

The next two goals owed much to the power of skipper Jamie Newbery as he scored from successive corners.

That goal left three players on a hat-trick!

Unfortunately for the trio there were no more goals, but this was an outstanding performance from Sidmouth, scoring seven goals for the second time this season against Newton Abbot and the defeat condemned the South Devon side to relegation four years after pipping Sidmouth to the league title!

As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
