Gliding into 2014

PUBLISHED: 08:30 16 January 2014 | UPDATED: 08:30 16 January 2014

The first full week of 2014 has seen more members airborne, and for longer at North Hill airfield, than we might have expected given the weather for gliding, writes Jill Harmer.

Although we’ve lost a couple of flying days to the rain, we’ve also had a couple of really lovely days – including one when the wind blew hard and long enough to give some members flights of 30 minutes and more.

Not bad for January! The sunshine of Saturday (January 11) brought out a large number of members seeking their first flights of the year under almost warm sunshine. The flights weren’t high or long, but those who took a tow to 2000-3000 feet reported wonderful views in clear visibility; the coasts of Devon, Dartmoor, the hills of South Wales to the flooded Somerset levels.
