Gliding conditions this week have been challenging at the Devon & Somerset Gliding Club. At times climbing in strong thermals but also avoiding the hefty showers and chasing pots of gold at the end of rainbows, writes Jill Harmer.

New Junior member Josh Funnell from Sampford Peverell hasn’t stopped talking about gliding since he took a flight on our Open Weekend last year. Now just turned 13 years, he has started training and planning to go solo when he is 14.

Lizzie Westcott from Dulverton (also 13 years) has continued her training over the last two months, and also introduced her grandpa John to the sport.

Both Lizzie and Josh have booked places on our course weeks in the summer holidays.

Meanwhile, preparations for our Open Weekend are proceeding apace. On Saturday and Sunday May 24 and 25, the club opens its doors to members of the public, and offers trial lesson flights without pre-booking, on a first come, first served basis. A winch launch and gliding flight of up to 15 minutes cost just £30.

Interested in gliding with us at Devon and Somerset Gliding Club? We have two places available on our June course or join us at our Open Weekend. Visit our website dsgc.co.uk for more details.
