Victorious B team captain Colin Macklin receives the Titherington trophy from club captain Paul Hitchcock; Losing captain Bob Webber tries to look pleased

The second leg of the Ken Titherington Trophy, provided the usual friendly rivalry between the Emerton Court seniors and the club B team, writes George Carr.

However, as many seniors habitually play for the B team during the summer, and B team players for the Emerton Court seniors’ team, loyalties can easily become confused and I suspect more than one pairing could not have said for sure whom they were representing.

However, the purpose of these two fixtures is to commemorate the life of Ken Titherington, a very popular young golfer, husband and father who was taken from us some 16 years ago in his prime and so the result, you may say, is incidental. All the same, the B team were hot favourites as they carried a three point lead from the first leg played earlier in the summer and so B team captain Colin Macklin must have been quietly confident as he teed off with his partner John Welch against Emerton Court captain Bob Webber and his partner, John Rockey.

Macklin’s confidence might have seemed misplaced however as he and John Welch found themselves brushed aside losing 6 and 5 on the 13th green. When Hugh Dorliac and Martin French were similarly swept aside, going down 4 and 3 to Trevor Kerridge and David Cowler for the seniors it seemed a change of fortune might be in hand for the Emerton Court side.

Alas, Dave Hoare and John Bainbridge could only manage a half against Lee Welham and Moray Bosence and from then it seems the broom changed hands entirely for nearly all the brushing aside was done by the B team; Pat McCormack and Terry Carter beaten soundly (4 and 3) by Nick Bater and Paul Hitchcock.

Out of kindness I won’t mention all the scores (Bob Wellsman and Alec Salway down 4 and 3) for, of the last seven matches, only Ray Gunston and Donald Cooper managed a win (2 and 1) against Mike Dommett and Peter Northcott, whilst George Carr and Mervyn Anthony scrambled a deserved and very sporting half against the formidable Jim Anderton and the not quite so formidable, Wilf Hudson.

So the B team were triumphant, winning six matches to four on the day giving them a deserved overall victory of five clear games.

After the traditional dinner in the club house the handsome Ken Titherington Trophy was presented to the winning captain, Colin Macklin, whose acceptance speech was as gracious as you might expect. He also thanked his B team sponsors - Signs Southwest - Acanthus Press - and East Devon Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic - for their support throughout the season.

●On Sunday, 30 players competed in the winter individual and it was Charles Oram who led the way with 41 points (worth £45 prize money) and Simon Knowles losing out on the back nine with the same score.

Paul Renken, two points further back, took third spot. Well done to you all - see you next Sunday!
