The first series of this year’s junior sail training at Lympstone Sailing Club draws to a conclusion this week, writes Brett Candy.

The Friday night activity has attracted a record 21 juniors this year. Sailing from the harbour in Lympstone the juniors have tackled a series of themed training evenings, from rigging a boat to sailing a course.

The club now has four dinghies for members to use, including two Laser Picos purchased this year. These new acquisitions were obtained through a strong fundraising drive during the winter from club members and a generous donation from Rob Hilton Architecture.

Sail Training Coordinator Emily Hawes explains why these boats are ideal for the youngsters: “The Pico is an easy boat to sail and the hull is tough -crucially sailors don’t need much strength to handle the sails. We’ve already had absolute beginners learn to sail from the beach and return to shore”.

Previous years students have made the progression to join the Lympstone mixed dinghy fleet, which go out most weekends and race in the Exe.

Its been especially pleasing that this month several youngsters participated in the annual Squires Cup, a race held in the Exe and this year organised by Starcross Yacht Club.
