Despite the showery and windy conditions last Sunday three late entries turned up to make a total of 19 teams competing for the Charity Shield with funds raised going to Hospicecare, writes Dave West.

The competition was run on a five-league basis from which play-offs for the Shield and Plate knockout finals were decided.

In the interval between the two playing sessions, pointing and shooting competitions were held to boost fund raising, and Sue Smith and Derek Hansen ensured that no-one missed the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for the many generously donated prizes.

The day offered a great opportunity to meet up with old friends from outside the Devon Region.

There were some keenly fought and enjoyable games throughout the day, but finally just four clubs took all the honours between them - defeated Ottery teams declaring that staging the event was reward enough!

Dave and Margaret West even won a raffle prize - the bottle of wine that they’d donated! (As ye give, so shall ye receive?)

The Shield winners were Franck and Bethanie Depreaux from Chudleigh who defeated Thierry Hacq and John Baxter, also from Chudleigh, 13-8.

The Plate winners were Dave and Rose Piggin from the Tregony Petanque Club, Cornwall who defeated Rob and Jean Brealey of the Isca club 13-10.

In the other competitions played the winner of the Shooting was Graeme Kirkham of the Tregony club whulst Isca’s Ted Brown won the Pointing competition.

Organiser and manager, Ottery chairman John Thatcher, was able to confirm that a total of £387.10 had been raised - the 10p had been picked up and not claimed!
