Ottery St Mary Petanque Club launched a new season last weekend with a double fixture against The Pig on the Hill and The Village Inn from North Devon, writes Dave West.

Because the Otters are awaiting a change of club location these games were played at Isca, with the Exeter side playing reverse fixtures with the N. Devon visitors.

Against The Pig on the Hill there was a 13-2 triumph for John Thatcher and Barrie Hall and a 13-3 win for the trio of John and Rose Thatcher together with Barrie Hal. Peter Smith and Mike Bird were 13-11 winners, Derek Hansen and Rose Thatcher claimed a 13-4 success, but there was a 13-2 defeat for the trio of Peter Smith, Derek Hansen and Mike Bird. Ottery won the match 4-1.

Next up against the Village Inn it proved to be a closer affair. The biggest winning margin was the 13-6 triumph by Barrie Hall and Sue Smith whilst the duo of John and Rose Thatcher and the trio of Peter and Sue Smith together with Mike Bird both claimed 13-10 victories.

John and Rose Thatcher with Barrie Hall lost 11-13 and Peter Smith and Mike Bird went down 13-10. This left Ottery the 3-2 overall winners.

This turned out to be a good start to the season for the Otters and an excellent introduction to this level for Mike Bird. The next challenge is at Chudleigh on April 13.

The Otters continue to play club sessions on Wednesdays and Sundays at the Salston Manor while awaiting a move to Strawberry Lane and anyone interested in playing petanque, also known as boules, can contact club secretary Dave West on 01404 812292.
