Ottery St Mary-based Ben Pearson is making a big names for himself in the world of motor sport, writes Stephen Birley.

The 16-year-old is the son of Ian and Karen Pearson of Pearsons Newsagent’s in Ottery.

Ben, an apprentice at Lovells Garage in Ottery St Mary, began karting at the age of 12 and won over fifty trophies, before, a year ago, he stepped up into the Junior Ginetta class which is for drivers aged 14-17 and is covered live on ITV4 as a support race to the British Touring Cars, watched by some 20 million viewers over the season and average track attendance is nearly 40,000!

The championship consists of 10 rounds at different circuits; Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington, to name just three.

The first round of this season’s championships is this coming weekend (March 29 and 30) at Brands Hatch.

Each round consists of practice, qualifying and then two races with the second race being televised live on the Sunday at 3pm.

In his first year of racing in the Ginetta Junior championship Ben ended the campaign on a high, finishing as runner-up in the Winter Series held at Snetterton in Norfolk last November.

The winter series consisted of qualifying and two races on each day and the points added up over the four races decided the overall positions.

On day one he had his best qualifying of the season and was lined up in third spot on the grid out of 16.

Race one saw him make a poor start in the slippery conditions, but he recovered to finish fifth and then, in race two he was second to land his first podium place in his fledgling racing career!

The following day the youngster went one batter and qualified in second spot for the final two races.

The first race saw him make a flying start to lead at the first corner, but halfway round the first lap, a mistake saw him spin off and he rejoined the race in 12th!

A turbo-charged bid followed as he weaved his way past six cars setting the fastest lap in the process to finish a creditable sixth.

The final race of the weekend saw him bag another second finish to end the weekend as runner-up in the winter series and he retuned to his Ottery home with three trophies for his endeavours.

In the main Ginetta Junior championship the teenager finished eighth overall with a best finish of fifth in a Silverstone race.

This year, as the only South West based rider in the national competition, he is hoping to once again be amongst the challengers.

Ben is keen to find sponsors who are guaranteed high profile coverage. Any business or individual that would be interested is asked to contact his father Ian either on 01404 812649, or by email at pearsonsnews@hotmail.com
