The annual Oxfam Exeter to Exmouth Kayak Rally organised by the Exe Sailing Club will take place on Saturday July 5, writes Rex Frost.
The club would appeal to paddlers of all ages and capabilities to take up this enjoyable (or challenging) family day out for a worthy cause.
With a growing number of participants entering each year, it is hoped that we may be able to surpass the record set last year of 163 paddlers in 109 craft, raising £1,400 for Oxfam.
The 2013 event saw representation from all over the South West, including a contingent from The Nags Head at Lyme Regis.
The highlight however, was the Exeter Execalibre Club Dragon Boat with a crew of 18 drumming its way through the flotilla of kayaks and canoes. We have since received enquiries from other dragon boat clubs who wish to compete with the Exeter Club at this summer’s event.
In spite of earlier interest shown by paddleboard outlets last year, we only had two entrants representing this growing sport.
More people should ‘stand up’ for this activity and we challenge them to join our kayakers and canoeists on the day.
With high tide that day at noon, we will have a later start this year setting off from Exeter basin between 9.30am and 10.30am to reach the canal end at The Turf to enjoy light refreshments before launching onto the river at 12.30pm.
The finish at Exe Sailing Club is expected between 1pm and 2pm where a team of volunteers and staff will be on hand to supply weary paddlers and their families and friends with barbeque food and other delights.
The entrance fee is £10 per craft, or sponsorship with a dedicated online facility.
