Harry Cobden led from pillar to post in a hot looking 138cm pony race at the South Pool meeting at Buckfastleigh, his mount Ninfield Millionaires Delight relishing the soft and testing ground.
The conditions also suited Talponciau Perfect Print (Barnaby Treneer) who moved up to second on the rising ground in the last third of the course. After a false start, Tina Smith, who was having only her second ever race ride on Bejowans Bouquet, was slowly away and trailed the field, but the pony made up ground hand over fist and was just three and a half lengths third. The pair will surely be in the winners’ enclosure soon. Bronze Lawrence (Hannah Welch) was fourth.
It was a Frost produced 1,2,3 in the 148 race. Bryony Frost won on her Dad Jimmy’s Tarka, Donald Comer Calder was second on Nikki Frost’s Calypso and Hugo Hunt was third on Jack Sparrow who was formerly Bryony’s pony. Tarka and Calypso were reversing Black Forest Lodge form with Jack Sparrow and Calypso, having just her second run, looks a smart prospect. Another to catch the eye was first time out Les Aigles Delbosco (Barnaby Treneer) who ran very creditably in fourth. The soft ground caught out several runners who have been used to being in the frame - amongst them Clover Jess, Annie IV and Flareon but they are likely to bounce back to form after the month’s break until the next meeting and with better ground.
Results: 138: 1, Ninfield Millionaires Delight, Harry Cobden; 2, Talponciau Perfect Print; Barnaby Treneer; 3, Bejowans Bouquet, Tina Smith; 4, Bronze Lawrance, Hannah Welch; Seven ran, 2l, 1 1/2l, 1.36.
