The Governors of Bicton College are celebrating a landmark day for the FE college with completion of phase 1 of a brand new sports hall onsite.

As the College gears up for the 2014-2015 academic year the new sports hall will provide extended space for the increasing number of students studying Sports Performance and Excellence at the College. The completion of phase 1 of the new hall marks a significant milestone in its construction, with the 26 week build due for completion in early January. Helping to mark the occasion is Chair of Devon County Council, Councillor Gribble as well as Jack Nowell of The Exeter Chiefs who represents the special relationship that the College has with the Exeter Chiefs Academy.

Built by leading construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall, the new hall will supply circa 710m2 of space for the broad range of sporting activities. The hall will contain cricket nets, 4 badminton courts, basketball nets, changing rooms, a landscaped outside area and a PE store. There will be the option to have a full size basketball court as well as 4 small courts.

The project evolved as a result of the move of Mill Water School to the Bicton College site. The hall has been designed and built to be a shared facility with use timetabled for both the School and the College. With funding support for the £1.3m cost in part from Devon County Council, the new sports hall is being shaped to the specific requirements of the School, the College and all of their students, with the construction in turn evolving around this.

As David Henley, Principal explains ‘Bicton College is pleased to acknowledge the support of Devon County Council in the construction of the new Sports Hall. The new space will enable our College Sports Maker to extend the already vast range of enrichment and sporting activities available to our students. It will also add to the excellent provision for students within the prestigious Exeter Chiefs Rugby Academy and the young women who join us for the first time in September as part of these AASE (Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence) Rugby Academy.’

From a construction point of view, Morgan Sindall was more than happy to bid on such a project. The facility is custom-made and incorporates feedback from the team at Bicton College. The materials used have been sourced for their environmental integrity by the project team. As Chris Spear, area director for Morgan Sindall, explains: “We’re very pleased to be marking the start of work on this exciting project. Once complete, the new sports hall will provide Bicton College with a great, purpose-built facility. The new building will feature a number of sustainable elements and will be clad in Siberian Larch – an attractive, hard-wearing, eco-friendly timber.”

Mr Spear continued: “It’s great to be working with Bicton College to create this new facility and the project team is looking forward to bringing their extensive experience in delivering educational sports facilities to bear on this project, which will be a great addition to the College campus.”

The hall marks the first stand-alone sports hall that Morgan Sindall has tackled in this region for a while and the project has brought in a number of contractors including local groundworks company Haldon Plant.
