Sidmouth junior team enjoy fun-packed weekend tour to Cornwall

Sidmouth Under-7s and Under-8s enjoyed a successful tour to Cornwall.

Twenty-eight players with supporting parents made the trip to the Duchy to meet St Ives, Hayle and Falmouth.

In all there were two Under-teams (one all girls) and four Under-7s teams formed for the matches.

The Saturday morning of the tour was spent surfing before the rugby commenced.

The Under-8s took on St Ives on the main club pitch before a senior XV game.

Ollie Marsh, Luca Manning and Charlie Brock were all amongst the tries with Toby Sanford and Charlie Turley providing superb support runs as a 10-8 victory was sealed. After the rugby the theme became superheroes with the best costume being won by tour mum Vicky Grove as an Incredible!

On Sunday there was a three-team tournament played involving Sidmouth, Falmouth and Hayle.

Falmouth fielded two Under-7 teams and one Under-8 team with Hayle providing one team of each.

The last game to be played was the Sidmouth girls against the Falmouth Under-8 team.

All the tour got behind the girls in what turned out to be the best contest of the tour!

For the first half the scores were even until Daisy Grove managed to wrestle the ball off a Falmouth player as he fumbled it. Quick hands moved the ball out to Ellie Wood who passed out of the tag to Cleo Turley who ran the full length of the pitch to score the winning try as she was tackled on the try line. The girls then tagged their hearts out for the second half to keep hold of the lead and close out an 8-7 victory.

The Under-7 games against Hayle were also fast and furious with a number of players including Jack Pugh, Thomas Grove, Jake Dunstan, Scott Monro Higgs and Tom Bird showing a huge improvement over the tour in their linking up and support play. The last half of the match saw the Hayle side tagged to a standstill with Harry Wood getting repeat tags till Hayle were eventually forced into touch which allowed Sidmouth to sneak ahead with the turnover ball.

Thanks must go to St. Ives, Falmouth and Hayle for providing a great atmosphere for the Sidmouth youngsters who experienced their first tour.

Also thanks to Philip Grove for organising the tour, but the jury is still out on the Flash superhero outfit!
