Barnstaple 29, Sidmouth 18
This season each round of the Devon Colts cup is played over two legs and away at Barnstaple two second half tries by Charlie Cotton give Sidmouth Colts a chance to progress, but the north Devon team’s handy 11 point lead makes them favourites in the second leg which is played in Sidmouth on November 30.
Sidmouth started well, turned-over possession from the kick-off and kept pressure on the home side to win a penalty which Harry West converted to take an early lead.
However, Barum were soon into their stride with good physicality around the breakdown and a rush defence which kept Sidmouth on the back foot.
With both sides fully committed the action was end to end, but fair to say that on the day Barnstaple kept the ball and used their possession more effectively than Sidmouth and well deserve the win.
This weekend the Colts play Bideford at home in a friendly which will be a great opportunity for those who didn’t make the cup team, and with a couple of players due back from injury there is plenty to play for.
