Seaton Tennis Club chairman, Andy Butcher, led the Men’s B team to an impressive 8-1 victory in its first match of the summer season on Sunday, April 27, in Division 6 of the Exeter and District Summer League against the Newton St Cyres C team.

The captains gambled on the weather, braving the rain showers to dust off any post-winter rustiness and played an entertaining, friendly match, ending in impressive form in their final sets to seal confident performances.

Andy Butcher and Pete Morton fought back from a set down to win the second set tie-break and the championship tie-break against the second Newton St Cyres pair, then quickly took control in the second match against the first pair as their confidence grew, achieving a thrilling 6-4, 6-0 win.

Last-minute substitute David Dower joined fellow Big-Hitter Peter Moroz in a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 win against the Newton St Cyres first pair, following that with an equally impressive 6-3, 6-1 result against the second pair. Big serves and winning volleys established their dominance throughout both matches. Peter had rushed straight from his daughter’s 3-0 victory for Ottery St Mary against Moors in the Under 14 East Devon football League Cup final – her success had obviously inspired her father’s assured performance on the tennis court!

The Seaton Men’s B team was delighted with the victory in its first match and glad to put all the team training in the wind and rain this winter to good use!

The Ladies A team secured a draw in a nail-biting thriller against Newton St Cyres A team on Friday in their first match in Division One, following promotion last summer. Captain Jan Waller partnered national junior Emma Hurst in a confident victory against the second couple. Their match against the first pair was of breathtaking quality with the Seaton pair losing a closely fought battle to a very experienced and talented Newton St Cyres first team. Nikki Keele and Julie Hopkinson showed resilience and determination to withstand the strength of the first pair, bouncing back to defeat the second couple to end with an honourable 5-5 result overall.

The newest Seaton league team, the Ladies C team, also managed a creditable 5-5 draw in their first match against Exeter Golf and Country Club D team on April 15, at Seaton, then travelled to Torquay this Thursday, securing an excellent 7-2 result against an experienced Torquay E side. Captain Teri Murphy played with Hanna Jacobsen and mother and daughter team Jenny with 12-year-old Anna Moroz won both their matches in their league tennis debut.

The Seaton Mixed A team managed a 4-4 draw against Samford Peverell in a very close match this Tuesday in Division One of the East Devon League, but the Mixed B team, despite Jeremy Warner and Ray Hunt bravely stepping up as last-minute substitutes, was unable to withstand the dominant Willand in Division Two.

The Mixed C team also struggled in its first match, finding a very high standard in Division 4 against the Newton St Cyres C team.

Adding the Men’s A team 5-5 draw against Torquay B in Division Two of the Exeter and District League means Seaton has finished the first two weeks of the summer season with four close draws, two losses and two emphatic victories in the past few days.

The club’s Winter League success will be a tough act to follow but experienced league players have supported eager novices and talented juniors to get the summer tennis season off to a flying start.
