Sidmouth Captain’s day success for O’Brien and McCormack.

PUBLISHED: 12:35 14 August 2014

The Sidmouth Club Captain’s Day was well supported last Saturday with the proceeds going to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation which raises money for research in to brain cancer, writes John Jonson.

Peter Standen and his staff had prepared the course in immaculate condition with some tight pin positions, and the format of the day was a pair’s stableford competition with one score to count on the par fours and fives and both scores to count on the par threes.

Leading the way in Division One for the men was Terry O’Brien and Pat McCormack with 55 points.

Ian Bright and Wilbert Hastie finished second with 54 points, beating Nick Bater and Paul Hitchcock into third place.

Chris Ward and Simon Emerson won Division Two with the best score of the day of 62 points, beating Nigel Sharp and Chris Timms into second place with Bob Johnston and John Eaton in third place. Sheila Tallon and Jenny Shearer won the Ladies’ Prize with 53 points beating Sue Billinghurst and Sue Langdon on a countback with Patty Morgan and Jill Jeffrey in third place.

There was a special ‘Seve Ballesteros Challenge’ on the 14th tee where players had the opportunity to use some Slazenger bladed irons or persimmon woods from the 1970’s similar to those used by the great man at the height of his career.

John Bainbridge won the nearest the pin competition, whilst Richard Trim won the prize for the best shot of the day in the opinion of former Devon Under-25s champion Richard Bowden.

The worst shot of the day went to Kym White, who in true Seve style, managed to put his tee shot into the green keeper’s car park!

Following the competition the members were able to enjoy a hog roast along with a prize draw and the total raised on the day for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation reached £2,051.00.
