The golfing season starts in customary style with the captains’ drive-in and outgoing captains’ putt-out, writes Hugh Dorliac.

This took place in January, but the accompanying competition had to be abandoned due to the weather. Remember that rain!

It was rearranged in May and the weather intervened once more so the third running of the Captains’ Texas Scramble finally took place on Saturday, happily in sunshine. Club captain Colin Macklin and ladies’ captain Sheila Faulkner were pleased to see a large turnout to contest the prizes.

Played in teams of four, in third place was the team of Brian Margison, Ron Davies, Nigel Sharp and Hugh Dorliac, who had been first out at 8am and came in with a really competitive score of 49.2.

This remained the leading score until late in the afternoon when David Pepperell and Lewis White with Jeremy and Sally Fox, posted an excellent 48. Shortly afterwards, the winning team of Mike Knight, Nick Gingell, Marc Jenkins and Ian Roberts came back in a brilliant 20 under par (inc allowance) 46 points. Their round included 5 twos and eleven birdies! Well done, to all competitors and especially the winning teams.
