Sidmouth’s Colin Paddon was first out at his home club’s Devon Men Veteran Golfers’ Association event – and his 37 stableford points kept him ahead of 119 other competitors for the rest of the day, writes Colin Stuckey.

Paddon, playing off 18, was in a three-man team competing for the Western Morning News Trophy, and he walked away with £50 and the President’s Putter for the best individual effort.

However, his score didn’t help his team take a top place in the team event. That honour – and the Western Morning News Trophy - went to the Dinnaton Golf Club trio of Brian Stockton (21), Alan Pover (19) and Brian Sullivan (15) who totalled 98 points.

The second team was from Downes Crediton and comprised of John Essery (13), Dennis Wright (16) and Paul Willcocks (22). They also scored 98 points, but were edged out on count back.

Teign Valley’s John Balchin (13), Stan Jones (14) and Roger Cox (13) came third with 95.

Forty teams from all over the county took part in the annual event.
