Sidmouth Blues, the ladies’ Over-50s League team, did very well in their latest match, which saw them in action at Honiton, writes Carol Smith.

The rink of Jean Brimson, Janice Quinn and skip Jane Painter, who were 11-all after 12 ends, went on to win 20-13 with the rink of Mary Turner, Ann Capon and skip Jill Bishop, who had trailed for much of their game, picking up a four on the penultimate end to give them the lead for the first time in the contest at 18-15.

They lost just one shot on the last end and so won 18-16.

This was a fine all-round performance that saw the team bank six points to sit third in the table.

The Yellow team was also in action, in their case at Ottery, where they got pretty wet!

They had a winning rink thanks to the efforts of Paddy Chew, Elaine Reed and skip Val Newnham, and so banked two points.

In the men’s Exeter and District Over-60s Triples League, Sidmouth B entertained North Tawton C in what was a very competitive game, one they won 39-27, banking six valuable points. With just three games left to play it’s a case of ‘onwards and hopefully upwards’.

The A team were also in away action, in their case at Culm Vale where they won one rink and drew the other, earning them seven valuable points and, if they keep winning, they will be promoted!

It was a strange game at Culm with the winning rink, after eight ends, only being two shots in front, but by the 13th they held a 31-9 advantage having won 20 shots in just five ends!

They then lost the next five ends, but still emerged 31-16 winners.

A strange game indeed – but then, that’s bowls! Well done, to Ray Tallent, Chris Nappin and skip Bob Seldon, and also to the other team for their draw.

● Sidmouth bowlers Jean Brimson and Jill Bishop play their quarter-final of the Devon County Ladies’ Over 70s Pairs on home soil next Thursday (August 23) with a 2pm start. Jean, Jill and Ann Capon also play their quarter-final of the Devon County Ladies’ Two Wood Triples, again on home soil, on the final Sunday of the month (August 26).

It would be lovely to see a good turnout of members to support the ladies.

On a very wet Sunday morning, Sandra Wheeler and Valerie Newnham were in action at Honiton in the Section Three final of the ladies’ county Over-55 pairs.

They were beaten, but were not disgraced, and the pair that beat them had previously booked a place at Leamington Spa in the major ladies’ pairs!

So no shame there, ladies, and well done for getting that far.
