Archant

Sidmouth Sailing Club’s usual Saturday club racing had to take a ‘back seat’ this weekend as the club hosted a Lark Association open meeting prior to their four-day National event being held at Sidmouth Sailing club from August 18.

On Saturday, the start of the planned four races had to be delayed due to the lack of wind.

The fleet remained ashore whilst the race team monitored the wind hoping that conditions would improve to get the sailing underway.

With a slight SW breeze picking up, the fleet was launched and the first race got under way at around 2.30pm.

With one race completed, the second race started only to see the slight breeze die away to almost nothing.

The race finished early and all boats returned to shore - with anticipation and hope of more wind on Sunday.

On Sunday, the race management team was on the water and preparing to set the course for the second day of racing.

However, disappointment soon set in as the forecasted wind failed to materialize and after a postponement of more than two hours of deliberation, the decision was made to cancel any further sailing for that day.

A short presentation was made to the winning Lark boat crew who were from Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

The commodore thanked all those volunteers that gave up their time to make the weekend such a social success in spite of the weather not providing the wind required for sailing.

Normal club sailing will resume on Saturday (June 16) and anyone interested in taking up this sport is welcome to come along and see what the club can offer.
