Sidmouth are through to the last 64 of the national ‘Mail on Sunday’ competition which includes all the clubs in England, Scotland and Wales after a close encounter with Elfordleigh at home last Sunday, writes Charlie Jarvis.

Mark Thomas won the first game of five with a three-and-two win which was cancelled out when the captain, David Pepperell, lost his match on the last hole.

Lewis (small boy) Perry, apparently a gift from God to the ladies of the world, put Sidmouth back in front with a two-and-one win before James Spiller also went down on the last hole.

This meant that the match would be decided by the last game which featured the heaviest ever man to captain Devon, Neil Holland.

This game went to the last hole and was halved, which meant that a sudden-death play off had to take place between the last pair. Fortune favoured Sidmouth as Neil Holland turned a two-foot birdie putt into a six foot par putt which he just about holed before the opposition somehow missed from three foot for a half. Sidmouth now await news of their next opponents in the sixth round.
