The weather relented sufficiently for the hard-core Sidmouth Sunday golfers to venture out for a round last weekend, writes Jonathan Lee.

Bob Skelly, Lee Wenham and new father Moray Bosence, led both gross and nett.

A five under par round of 61 less four-point-three handicap shots added up to a comfortable margin over Hugh Dorliac, Craig Melluish and Simon Knowles.

Second place was enough to push Knowles back to the top of the Winter League table

The Streatham Trophy is the major event of the winter and may be the largest cup in the cabinet at Sidmouth Golf Club.

The competitions committee clearly have it tailored to their liking as they all figured in the prizes.

Chairman Neil Faulkner and his committee sidekick Paddy Tallon took the prizes on the day with a fine 44 points.

Lester Willmington is new to the pressures of office, but paired up with Vice-Captain John Barnard for second place two points adrift. Faulkner and Tallon will now go head-to-head with the rested pair of Will Hastie and Moray Bosence in the final at the end of the month

There was a touch of spring in the air to greet the 28 players that contested a better-ball match at Sidmouth last Sunday morning.

A tight leader board resulted with Steve Channing and Derek Platten sneaking a win with a creditable 42 points, one ahead of four other pairs.

John Eaton and Steve Punter got the benefit of the card countback for second place.

Ray Gunston was guided home at his own pace by Chris (CM) Roberts in third.

The Sidmouth Winter League is now headed by Derek Platten.

‘Dancin’ Derek sits four points clear of Simon Knowles who sits second.

Two players, Ray Gunston and Lee Wenham sit two points adrift of Knowles in joint third.
