Sidmouth golfers have been enjoying the sunshine of late and some have even come out winners, writes Hugh Dorliac.

In the Upper Crust-sponsored Monday Stableford competition, a senior member, David Bromage, enjoying a resurgence after surgery, won last week’s competition with an amazing 43 points earning a three point cut in his handicap along with his prize money.

Second was Neil Holland on 40 with Mark Thomas third on 39, both getting a cut of one shot.

This week, despite making a complete mess of the ninth hole, Simon Emerson came back in 41 points earning him a two shot reduction. Terry Jones came second with 39 and Mark Thomas featured yet again on 37. Always the bridesmaid....

The Sidmouth Jewellers-sponsored Friday stableford on June 15 saw Steve Milton collect the top prize with 39 points, closely followed by Jonathan Lee and Mike Knight on 38 each.

● The summer sun continues to blaze brightly and on such a day Sidmouth golf club held their Mixed Pairs Open. In such dry conditions, which meant it was tough even to get the tee pegs into the ground, many pairs found it hard going, but not all!

Having spent the winter months down under honing their golf skills on lush New Zealand courses, John and Diane Anderson returned in style to their home course to beat all opposition with a terrific 47 points, 11 points better than par and three points better than runners-up Mike Hobbs and Alison Goodwin. The third place pair were Paul and Sue Hackett on 41, whilst the best visiting pair were Alan and Maggie White from Findon Valley, Oxfordshire.

● With the lack of any rain in recent weeks, the golf course has made playing very difficult with hard bouncy fairways and unforgiving greens. This was not helped by some of the flag positions, which were difficult even for the home side.

Once again Sidmouth were giving lots of shots to their Boringdon Park opponents and several matches looked to be going the visitors’ way by the halfway stage.

However, holes 10, 11 and 12 turned the matches around for Sidmouth where local knowledge and solid golf enabled the home team to successfully put the pressure on and win all the matches.

With the overall score of both legs being 8-2, Sidmouth now play Stover in the quarter-finals.
