Sidmouth A hit top spot in Exeter and District Over-60s League

Sidmouth played their first ten rink friendly match of the season during the bank holiday weekend, writes Ron Cook.

It was against a combined team from Woking Park, in their centenary year, and Horsell BC in Surrey.

Sidmouth were the overall winners with a score of 175 to 158. The best of the home rinks was the one of Paddy Chew, Janet Thompson, Ken Day and Ron Cook who won 19-8.

On Monday the club’s traditional drive was played as mixed triples with Ken Day, Mary Bristow and Jennie Fricker taking the prize with a shot difference of 12.

Sidmouth took a mixed triples team to play St Thomas in Exeter and they won on four of the rinks with an overall score of 84-60 in their favour.

Paddy Chew, Gordon Brown and Alan Davis led the way with a 20-10 success.

This week got off to a fine start with a touring side, Monmouth Trundlers, enjoying their tour of Devon in usual style!

There was merrymaking until four in the morning causing havoc with getting locked out of bedrooms, and arriving early to enjoy a drink or two before the match.

In spite of that, they still beat Sidmouth by a healthy margin with the final score being 152-77 in the tourists favour.

On the County scene, Sidmouth found Seaton too strong again in the Foxlands, losing by four shots overall. The away team of Ed Backhouse, Bob Daniels, David Hughes and Ron Cook, managed to bag a 20-14 win, but could not make up the loss by 10 shots for the home team.

The teams opening game in the County Trophy was against Ottery St Mary. Played in heavy rain from start to finish, it was the Otters who emerged victorious. The only Sidmouth rink to win was the one of David Butler, Bert Hague, John Mason and Brian Smith who secured a 21-14 success.

Madeira also proved too strong for Sidmouth earlier this week with the sole Sidmouth success a drawn rink in the away match.

The Sidmouth A squad have hit top spot in the Exeter and District Over-60s League for the first time in 10 years!

That news comes after the team prospered well against both Pinces Gardens and Honiton, banking 14 points in all.

The Sidmouth B and C squads bagged a mixed set of results and continue to find themselves up against stiff opposition regardless of tem being home or away!
