The Budleigh League held it’s annual end-of-season presentation evening earlier this month, writes Sue and Peter Mison.

The Budleigh League is an evening triples league which runs weekly throughout the season.

Sidmouth have a representative squad of players, run by Peter Bates, and during this evening much like our Sidmouth League has a consolation competition for those teams who have not won any of the major honours.

On this occasion we are delighted to say that the team from Sidmouth won the consolation competition beating teams from Madeira and Exonia on the way.

Well done to Wilf Radburn, Mike Reader and skip Ron Cook.

The last of the in-house Sidmouth finals was played and it saw a thoroughly engaging final of the Turner Cup.

Entrants in to the Turner Cup are the last eight ladies and the last eight men left in their respective singles competition.

This year’s final saw Jill Bishop take on Tony Brown. The game started off quite level before Brown started to pull away and to lead by more than ten shots.

However, Bishop started to fight back and very nearly drew level before Brown edged home to land the trophy by a margin of two shots.

It was an occasion most worthy of the final; two excellent players and the spectators were kept on the edge of their seats for the whole match.

Also played was the Mixed Pairs final and this saw the duo of Ray Tallent and Doreen Pound playing Sue Mison and John Davies.

This game was fairly level up to the last few ends when Mison and Davies began to pull away and eventually secured a nine shot success.

The re-arranged first session of the Closing Drive was played on two rinks. A good morning was had by all with Mary Smith, Doreen Pound, Mary Turner and skip Brian Smith winning on one rink by 21 shots to 15 and Jan Jameson Bates, Sue Mison, Jim Brown and skip Zena Johnson winning on the other by 30 shots to 17.

The final sessions of the Closing Drive for the indoor season were then played the following day.

Two rinks played at 2pm with the best rink for this session being Harry Carpenter, Dorothy Jones, David Fairclough and skip David Ingyon with a score of 18 shots to 11.

Three rinks played in the 4.30pm session with the best rink for this session being the triples rink of Ken Bridgman, Anita Mason and skip David Fairclough who won by 24 shots to 6.

Now that the Indoor Season has closed we wish outdoor captain’s Val Newnham and John Greenaway a successful, enjoyable and dry campaign.
