Sidmouth captain stages splendid day and its succesful for Chipcase, Day and Fairclough

07:35 31 August 2014

Sidmouth men’s captain John Greenaway celebrated his year in office on August 21, with no fewer than 36 bowlers turning out for a triples match, writes Ron Cook.

The winners for the captain were John Chipchase, Ken Day and David Fairclough with an overall score of plus six.

Well done, to John who was playing only his second game for the club!

The winners for the vice captain were determined by countback leading to Harry Carpenter, Ralph Brooks and Ron Cook doing the business for the vice captain of the day, Frank Adlam.

Thanks must be recorded, plentifully too, to the Sidmouth ladies who once again provided an excellent tea.

As usual captain John regaled his honoured guest’s and players, with a slightly tortuous joke!

Amongst the many attending the day were eleven guests in total including eight non playing past captains, past presidents and senior members of the club .

Sadly, the drive for our favoured charity this year, Sidmouth Hospice, became a casualty of the weather on Bank Holiday Monday and so had to be cancelled.

In the Exeter and District Over-60s Triples League there were some surprise scores!

Sidmouth A suffered a big shock with the loss of all eight points in the meeting with Madeira who were victorious by four shots and five shots on the rinks.

However, the taste of defeat was sweetened somewhat when news came through that rivals for the top honour, Marina A had also lost heavily and they too had seen all eight points go to opponents Topsham.

That all means that Sidmouth retain top spot in Division One and require the full eight points from their final outing to secure the title.

If it was bitter-sweet for the A squad then the B and C squads were able to deliver good news as both won.

The points the pair picked up were most welcome and helped to stretch the gap between them and the dreaded drop zone.
