Sidmouth croquet players find conditions not best suited to their game!

07:36 31 August 2014

A team from Sidmouth Croquet Club travelled to Kingston Maurward for their final match of the season in the South West Federation SE Golf Handicap League, writes Ian Simpson.

This was the third away match to be played on lawns of a quality that would not be acceptable to members of the Sidmouth and Budleigh Clubs. We are exceptionally fortunate with the standard of our lawns at the Fortfield.

Kingston Maurward has one half size and one almost full size lawn set in the gardens of the Agricultural College.

Sidmouth struggled with the lawns in the morning and at lunch had only won two doubles and one singles game out of nine played. The teams then enjoyed a sociable lunch provided by the hosts.

The afternoon play proved more successful for Sidmouth with four singles games won and two drawn however Kingston Maurward came out overall match winners at 12 to eight.

All Sidmouth players won at least one game with Phillip Harris the most successful with two singles and a doubles win. Ian Simpson managed to win two singles and then draw his final game.

The team has finished the season with fewer successes than it would have liked, but a considerably greater experience of playing on lawns of variable quality and with improved handicaps for several of its members

As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
