Sidmouth ladies bank four more points in their Lane League campaign

Sidmouth ladies’ played another round in the Lane Trophy competition against Kingsley on the usual two rinks at home, two away basis last week, write Sue and Peter Mison.

Sidmouth were successful on both home rinks, but lost by narrow margins on both The two winning rinks were Mary Turner, Christa Turner, Rita Daw and skip Freda Humphries, the latter skipping her first Lane match and led the team to a 17-11 success whilst Sylvia Cook, Beryl Sparkes, Pat Harvie and skip Dreda Taylor were 15-13 victors.

All that means that Sidmouth banked a other four points in their Lane League campaign.

The same afternoon Sidmouth men played another round of the County Trophy Over-60s League against Torquay United, winning on one home and one away rink, but losing overall to Torquay by 76 shots to 84.

The winning home Sidmouth rink was that of Maurice Watson, Dave Lever, Bob Daniels and Ron Cook who won by 24 shots to 15 whilst the victorious away rink comprised Ray Tallent, Peter Mison, Dennis Denner and skip John Mason who won 21-17.

Last Thursday the club gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of a former regular bowler, Phil Brightmore who was honoured with coffee and cake surrounded by other former bowlers and current club members.

Phil was presented with a bouquet of flowers by club president Harold Casson and blew out the candles on her birthday cake.

A sprightly Phil, who still goes out for a walk every day, thanked everybody for helping her to celebrate her birthday and enjoyed chatting to old and new friends.

Sidmouth played a three rink mixed match against Isca on Saturday afternoon. In a close match Sidmouth won overall by 54 shots to 53 although they lost on two of the three rinks. The winning rink was that of Wilf Radburn, Bill Turner, Elaine Reed and skip Paddy Wrench who won by 28-11.

Chris Hamer and her entertainments team organised a Quiz on Saturday and, being Burns Night, there was a Scottish flavour to the evening with a Haggis being piped in and taken around by quizmaster John Greenaway, resplendent in kilt and tam-o’-shanter!

Many members had come in tartan dress which also added to the occasion. Supper was served halfway with Haggis Pie, Cottage Pie and bashed neeps on the menu, followed by Eton Mess.

As always, Chris had thought of everything with tartan flags flying, and tartan runners and serviettes for the tables.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all with Marian and Maurice Watson and Sue and Peter Mison being the eventual winners, closely followed by Paddy and John Chew and Paddy and Jim Wrench.

Last Sunday local rivals Honiton came to Sidmouth to play a mixed match. Honiton won on two rinks and overall by 57 shots to 48.

The Sidmouth success came on the rink of Alastair McGregor, Sylvia Cook, Jenny Fricker and skip Ron Cook who won by 20 shots to 14.
