Sidmouth ladies bank six points from final Lane Trophy game of the season

Sidmouth ladies were in the action for the final time in this season Lane Trophy last week, write Peter and Sue Mison.

It was against table-topping Torbay and turned out to be an enthralling contest with Sidmouth securing success so both home rinks, but only one of the two away rinks and the final score was 764-62 in favour of Torbay.

On the plus side the three rink success means six points banked to the season’s total.

The winning rinks at home were Anita Mason, Christa Turner, Elaine Reed and skip Margaret King who won by 10 shots to 9 whilst Connie Tolley, Jean Green, Jenny Fricker and skip Eileen Stribling won 22-18.

The successful away rink comprised of Lorna Lever, Beryl Sparkes, Pat Harvie and skip Dreda Taylor who won by 19 shots to 16.

Last Thursday the ladies played the annual Joan Jeffrey competition which this year was contested as a triples event.

Despite having to find two replacements at the last minute, competition secretary Paddy Chew ran a very successful and enjoyable day with first, and some second round matches, played from 9am through to 4.30pm.

There were some very close games, with one rink having to play an extra end to find the winner.

In the final analysis the players who made it through to the semi-finals are; Ann Elwood, Paddy Chew and skip Paddy Wrench who will be playing Jackie Godbeer, Jean Green and skip Jill Bishop whilst the other semi-final will see Connie Tolley, Doreen Pound and skip Zena Johnson taking on Maureen Lamb, Mary Bristow and skip Dreda Taylor.

On Saturday Sidmouth travelled with three mixed teams to Taunton Vivary Bowling Club where they were up against strong opposition and subsequently lost 77-42.

The lone success was the rink of Susie Bonnell, Christa Turner, Ken Tolley and skip John Mason who won 19-13.

On Sunday Sidmouth entertained Feniton at home in a three rink friendly match which saw the hosts land victories on two of them with one drawn.

Overall Sidmouth were 79-37 victors and the winning here Sidmouth won on two rinks and drew on the third, winning overall by 79 shots to 37.

The top winning home rink was that of Ron Denning, Chris Radburn, Sylvia Cook and skip Ed Backhouse who won by 33 shots to 9.
