Sidmouth seniors see off Exminster in some style

Sidmouth seniors entertained Exminster last Thursday, writes Chris Grubb.

The weather was warm and sunny and the course was in very good condition with fast greens.

Seniors captain Nigel Sharp decided to have a mid-season holiday and handed over the reins to Glyn Hewitt for the day.

There was a touch of sadness during the event as a member of the Exminster club had died the day before so a minute’s respect was shown on the first tee before the match began.

Exminster were a man short and David Roberts from Sidmouth agreed to play with the opposition.

First out, acting seniors captain Glyn Hewitt playing with Nigel Sharp, won their match five-and-four after being four holes up after just six holes.

Second out were Ray Gunston and Phil Spencer who found themselves up against the ‘ringer’ David Roberts and Exminster’s /Bob Dyer with the Sidmouth pairing losing by one hole, but what hurt the most was the Sidmouth pairing had to buy the drinks for David Roberts at the meal afterwards!

Third out were Dieter Ritz and Barry Jones and they recorded a comfortable five-and-four success.

Les Pratt and Colin Mitchell were fifth out and they were three-and-two winners.

Next out were Bob Winstone and Terry Carter who won three-and-four which represented an impressive comeback as they had been three down after five holes.

The final pair out were Brian Cole and Charles Brown who won conclusively seven-and-five.

Overall Sidmouth were worthy, and convincing winners at 5-12. The way match against Exminster is scheduled for next week.
