Sidmouth Toucans continued their recent progress and served up one of their best collective displays of the season in their latest Honiton Netball League meeting with Uplowman.

The Mid Devon side are renowned as a tall team and they always present a challenge for opposition outfits.

The first quarter was close with Uplowman a fraction ahead at 7-5 after Toucans had given as good as they got from the first whistle with a highlight being a graceful face plant and slide from wing defence Sarah Burston. The move was worthy of the Winter Olympic slopes!

During the second quarter, despite the valiant attempts of Sarah Fletcher (GK) and Louise Neilson (GD) to deflect the ball back up the court, Uplowman pulled ahead to hold a 23-10 advantage at the midway stage.

Toucans introduced skipper Sarah Sparks at wing attack, replacing the hard-working Lucy Davies and, after a half-time team talk the plan of action for the side was to go out and make sure of banking the point on offer for scoring over half the winning teams score.

In the third quarter, with center Rachel Darlami pulling some impressive turns in mid-air, and with the duo of Helen Terry (GA) and Alexa Baker (GS), working hard under the net, the Toucans achieved what they set out to do when the score sat at 32-18.

The fourth quarter saw Uplowman score a further 16 goals, but Toucans battled on and managed to keep in the points zone themselves.

Both teams received 10 fair play points and the Toucans Player of the Match award went to wing defence Sarah Burston who worked extremely hard throughout the match.

With one remaining rescheduled game of the winter season, the Toucans are looking forward to the summer league in Honiton where a handicapped system is operated with all teams from both divisions playing together.

As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
