Sophie Keech second in the British Girls Open qualifier.

Sophie Keech finished second in the Girls Open Amateur Championship qualifier held at the Massereene Golf club in Northern Ireland.

There were 144 girls in the competition and, after the first stage, the 36-hole qualifier, Keech was three shots adrift of leader Puk Lyng from Denmark.

Next up was the match play and Keech was a two-and-one winner in her opening match against Antonia Eberhard of Germany.

The weather closed in to push back tee times and Keech, in her next match-play tie, did not get out until 6.24pm. In the gathering gloom she was beaten four-and-two.

Her busy agenda did not stop with that event for she was swiftly on to the next one, the British Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championships in Ashburnham in Wales.

After two rounds Sophie made the cut as one of the top 40 players. On the final day Keech endured a mixed round that included five birdies and pars, but one or two with individual scores of eight or over.

However, in true fighting spirit she continued to make every putt count, saving the very best for last as she sank a 40-foot birdie putt in front of the gallery to score a final round of minus two to see here placed 30th in the final standings.

As any sportsman will tell you it hurts to lose, it also hurts to lose by one point, it hurts even more to lose by one point in the last two minutes of a game and it hurts a lot to lose when it was the best team that lost, writes Robert Baugh.
