Wednesday April 2 was the annual President’s Day at Sidmouth Bowls Club, this year’s president being Harold Casson, write Sue and Peter Mison.

Two sessions of bowls were played with a delicious tea served between the two games, prepared by Sylvia Cook and assisted by Elaine Reed and Jane Painter. Harold had invited past presidents and other guests to the tea and it is always good to see former players. Both sessions were played as drives which everyone enjoyed.

The president presented the tea ladies with thank-you gifts and the lovely flower arrangements which Sylvia does so well were drawn for and given to eight lucky ladies.

On Friday afternoon Taunton Vivary travelled to Sidmouth to play a three rink mixed match. Sidmouth were in good form winning on all three rinks and by 88 shots to 32. Well done, to our best rink Mary Smith, Bill Turner, Christa Turner and skip Peter Mison who won by 37 shots to 9.

On Sunday afternoon we held a Bowls Taster Session from 2pm until 5pm. Despite the rainy conditions fifteen people came along to try their hand with fourteen signing up for lessons with our team of coaches. We hope they will take to the game and become fully fledged members.

On Tuesday the Ladies played the Gents in three separate sessions as is customary at the beginning and end of each season.

Unfortunately the Gents could not produce enough players so as the ladies were oversubscribed six played as ‘gents’, four in the first session and two in the second! The overall score for the day was a win for the Gents by 149 shots to 132. It must be mentioned that in the first session of triples two ladies were playing in the same team for the gents and won the match by three shots!

The best rink in the first session was Alastair McGregor, Jackie Godbeer and skip David Ingyon who won by 19 shots to 13, the best rink in the second session was Brian Barber, Bill Turner, Tony Holland and skip David Fairclough who won by 21 shots to 11, and the best in the third session was Tony Crow, Tony Constable, Allan Davis and skip John Mason who won by 25 shots to 11.
